Port of Liverpool - Container Barge Operation

A new dimension has been added to Britain's "green transportation agenda" with the launch of a pusher tug barge operation linking the Port of Liverpool's Royal Seaforth Container Terminal with the inland container terminal at Irlam on the Manchester Ship Canal.

The service, offering a waterbourne alternative to goods movement on the UK's congested roads, is operated by Peel Ports, utilising the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal as a water highway into the heart of the UK's North West.

Some 8,000 to 10,000 containers are expected to be taken off road transport this year and loaded onto the 160 teu capacity push tug and barge, which makes up to three sailings a week between the two terminals carrying cargoes ranging from wines to molasses, construction materials to foodstuffs.

The environmentally friendly service which now includes calls at Ellesmere Port on the Ship Canal, is set to expand with the development by Peel Ports of Port Salford in Greater Manchester, a tri-modal facility on a 150 acre site close to the M60 motorway, offering a transportation interface for goods moving by canal, road and rail.
