Port of Liverpool appoints Briggs Equipment UK to provide key engineering services

Mersey Port aims to become the most reliable and responsive port in the UK

For Immediate Release - 26 July, 2010

Peel Ports has appointed Briggs Equipment UK to undertake the engineering maintenance of its operational plant and equipment at the Port of Liverpool.

Briggs will be responsible for what is a multi-million pound asset base, spanning some 1,200 acres, with the Port's underlying objective being to deliver the most reliable and responsive service to its customers of any UK port.

The Port of Liverpool and Briggs will aim to maximise equipment uptime and predictive/preventative maintenance programmes. This includes a set target to provide 98%+ equipment availability, when required by operations, coupled with statutory and PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance) programmes ensuring a proactive approach delivering high levels of equipment availability.

Examples of the equipment which will be handled within the contract are ship-to-shore container cranes, quayside cranes, straddle carriers, harbour mobile cranes and other mobile equipment supporting the port's multi terminal operations.

Brad Crumbleholme, Engineering Manager for the Port of Liverpool, said: "The Port has undergone major changes over recent times with engineering being one of them. We have an aggressive growth programme and recognise that this can only be delivered with outstanding customer service. By illustrating our vision for the future and adopting best practice, the support offered by Briggs will enable us to realise these challenges.

"A huge amount of time and effort has been put into finalising this agreement and we can now look forward to implementing the planned improvements needed to take the Port of Liverpool operations to the next level. Engineering activities play a crucial role within the Port and by partnering with Briggs Equipment UK we are confident we will see the benefits that world class engineering activities can have on maximising our operational capability."

The Port's overriding vision is to build and further develop a predictable, repeatable and stable engineering maintenance function which operates to a world class standard utilising highly skilled engineers, modern work methods and optimised tooling and diagnostics, all encompassed within a CI (Continuous Improvement) framework.

Already this year, Peel Ports has delivered a number of successes, including increasing capacity on the barge service provided along the Manchester Ship Canal, adding additional services into the Port of Liverpool's container terminal and integrating the offers of Liverpool and Manchester, creating a 44-mile stretch of water in the heart of the UK.

Together, the Port of Liverpool and Manchester Ship Canal offer a comprehensive range of port facilities, handling more than 40 million tonnes of cargo and 16,500 ship movements a year – making the River Mersey Britain's third busiest estuary.
